Finding Your Online Audience

Finding the right online audience can be a challenge. If you’re directing your social media channels or website toward the wrong audience (or worse, no specific audience at all), it won’t matter how many great Facebook posts you have, or how many brilliant tweets you’ve composed on Twitter. Finding an audience will help your practice and online presence to flourish.

So, how should you go about finding the right online audience?

  1. Conduct research to find your audience. If you practice a specialty that will appeal to a certain demographic, (age, gender, location, etc.) it’s important to do research on how to best reach that audience. Doing research may also help you find an entirely new audience you didn’t originally think of as a target. Consider using focus groups, online tools, or surveys to determine who your audience is.
  2. Take a good look at the competition. Following research, take a look at what your competition has in terms of a web presence. Focus on competitive medical sites that has a high volume of traffic, and develop a marketing strategy that will help you gain the same edge. For example, if your competition is on a certain website, it’s because there is already a large audience there. It’s also important to take a look at how your competition is engaging with their customers. Take a look at what sort of social media they are using, so you can get an idea of what your own online marketing strategy should include.
  3. Engage your audience. Once you’ve determined your target audience, take these questions into consideration: “What is my audience interested in?” or “What do they want to read about?” Sell yourself as a doctor, and promote your practice as a whole to your audience. Post information that is appealing and informative. Also, consider starting a blog for your practice, which will help patients gain an even greater insight into your practice.
