A hashtag is a word or phrase prefixed with the # symbol, which automatically makes that word or phrase into a searchable link. Hashtags are used on social media channels to connect individuals to a niche group interested in a particular subject. Doctors, for example, can take part in a healthcare-focused social media conversation by simply placing the hashtag symbol in front of a relevant medical keyword or phrase.
If you’re not a regular social media user, you may be unfamiliar with how to use hashtags effectively. Here are the top rules of hashtag use.
Top Rules of Hashtag Use:
- Don’t use too many words in a hashtag. This is perhaps the biggest mistake made when it comes to hashtags. Hashags containing too many words look sloppy and unprofessional- for example: #thishashtaghaswaytoomanywordsinit. In addition, don’t use too many hashtags in a single post- your readers might lose interest if all they see are hashtags in one post. In the interest of keeping your readers engaged, limit your hashtags to 2 or 3 per post.
- Keep it simple. Your hashtags should be kept to the point- not loaded up with unnecessary words or characters. Keeping your hashtags short and sweet will also enable you to engage more effectively in conversations with your patients and medical colleagues.
- Check your spelling before posting a hashtag. Before you post any hashtag in a Tweet or Facebook post, make sure your spelling is correct. If you spell your tagged word incorrectly, no one will be able to locate your posted hashtag, and you will be unable to take part in an online conversation using the same hashtag.
- Don’t include spaces between words. If you want to hashtag two or more words together, don’t place a space between the words. Spacing out the two words will result in only the first word of the post being tagged.
