A new Facebook audio recognition feature that’s been quietly rolled out has the ability to identify the music or TV show that users are watching, and automatically tag it in a post.
How It Works
Let’s say you’re watching the latest Game of Thrones episode or listening to your favorite song on the radio. If you have the new feature activated on your smartphone, it will “listen in” by utilizing your phone’s microphone and uses audio-recognition technology to identify what song or show you’re currently enjoying.
It will then give you the option to have the identified media tagged in a status update, sharing what you’re listening to with your followers. That way, the feature will automatically tag music, TV shows or movies in status updates as you experience them.
Hear It, Share It
Of course, the new feature won’t always be able to find a match for and identify exactly what you’re listening to. However, if it does, it will give you the option of sharing a 30-second snippet of the song you’re listening to with your Facebook friends.
When sharing information about what TV shows you’re watching, the feature will note what season and episode you’re watching in its automatic post. That way, potential “spoiler” situations can be avoided, and your friends can join in on commenting on your post after they have caught up to the episode that you posted about.
Privacy Settings
Facebook’s standard privacy settings will apply to the new feature, so you can select which of your friends can see the posts. If you’re wary of having your mobile device “listen in” on you, the feature can be easily turned off at any time by clicking an audio icon located at the top right of the screen.
The feature is currently unnamed and expected to become available in other countries within the coming weeks. It has been initially available to Facebook users in the U.S. who access the social media network’s app on their smartphones, including Android and iOS devices.
